What to Expect During a Skin Check

Understanding what to expect during a skin check can help ease any anxiety and ensure a productive appointment. A skin check is essential for maintaining good skin health, as well as detecting potential skin issues early on.

Prepare for your appointment

Here are ways to prepare for your skin check appointment:

  • Make a list of any specific concerns or changes you’ve noticed on your skin.
  • Gather information about your medical history.
  • If possible, refrain from wearing makeup or nail polish. All parts of your skin, including nails and hair, will be examined.

During the skin check

Firstly, the skin specialist will review your medical history, asking questions about past and current skin conditions, allergies, medications, and any previous treatments.

Patients will undress and put on a gown. The exam will be thorough of your skin from head to toe, inspecting moles, freckles, birthmarks, and any other skin abnormalities.

The skin specialist will pay special attention to any suspicious or atypical moles or lesions that could be indicative of skin cancer or other skin conditions. Dr. Novikov Wellness and Skin Care providers use a dermatoscope to get a more accurate assessment of the skin.

Next, the provider will evaluate your risk factors for skin cancer and may perform a full-body skin cancer screening. This includes assessing the ABCDEs of moles: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter, and Evolution (changes over time).

The provider will perform a skin biopsy to determine if the suspicious area indicates cancer or not.

Aditionally, your provider will offer guidance on proper skincare, sun protection, and ways to prevent common skin issues throughout the skin check appointment. They may discuss lifestyle changes and potential treatments for any diagnosed conditions.

Furthermore, follow-up plans will be discussed and developed as needed.

Be proactive with your skin

Most importantly, a skin check is a proactive step towards maintaining your skin health. If you have any concerns about your skin, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment. Early detection and timely treatment can make a significant difference in positive outcomes.
