Microneedling

Don’t let the word needle scare you. The benefit is fresher, rejuvenated skin!

Microneedling is a safe cosmetic procedure that utilizes tiny, sterilized needles on the tip of a pen-like instrument. The method induces a controlled injury into the skin’s dermal and epidermal junction. The procedure stimulates the natural production of collagen as your own body heals itself without any synthetic or unnatural treatments. The result is healthier, more youthful looking skin. Additionally, it’s more affordable than many other cosmetic procedures for fine lines, wrinkles and scarring. The process causes much less damage to the epidermis than dermal rolling, lasers, or other ablative treatments.

If you think about your skin as a stack of papers, topical treatments are like treating one page at a time. Microneedling is the quickest and most effective solution to stimulate the production of collagen.

Information About The Instrument

The Collagen P.I.N. (Percutaneous Induction Needling) is the microneedling device used at Dr. Novikov Wellness and Skin Care. Moreover, the FDA has approved the treatment to enhance the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 years and older with specific skin types.

There are over the counter devices that claim to do the same thing. However, a trained skin professional is the best person to perform the procedure.

Who Can Use Microneedling?

The procedure works well for all skin types and there are no allergy concerns. Microneedling is better for sensitive skin than chemical peels.

The most popular area for microneedling is the face to minimize wrinkles and fine lines, improve skin texture, and to reduce pore size and scar appearance. It can be effective anywhere on your body, including where you may have stretch marks or scars. Microneedling can also be used on the neck, décolletage, hands, arms, legs, abdomen and back.

What To Expect

A typical appointment is about an hour from start to finish. Ensure that any cuts or wounds in the area to be treated are fully healed before proceeding.

  • Remove makeup. Before the procedure, remove makeup and ensure the skin is clean and dry.
  • Numb the area. The provider will apply a numbing agent (lidocaine cream) to minimize your feeling the quick pricks from the microneedling pen. The procedure, however, involves minimal pain. After about 15 minutes, the numbing agent will be removed and the procedure will begin.
  • The provider will customize the depth of the needles based on the patient’s individual needs and the area to be treated.

Post Procedure

Post procedure advice is to be gentle with the treated area for a few days and not use anything harsh. The most common side effect is some redness that might look like a sunburn on your face. Some people may experience a little swelling.

  • You will be sent home with a sample gentle cleanser and moisturizer, which are recommended.
  • You may want to wait a day to apply your normal makeup and to avoid sun exposure. Micro channels in the dermis have been created and your skin will be sensitive and needs time to recover.
  • Keep hydrated to aid in the healing process.
  • Follow any specific aftercare instructions provided by your skin specialist to ensure optimal results.

Although it varies for each patient, you should see results within three months. Therefore, three sessions scheduled every four weeks is the recommendation. Patients with deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, stretch marks, or any type of scars may require six or more treatments to achieve the desired results. Some patients feel skin firmness after only one session. Unlike injectable fillers, there is no loss of results.

New collagen and elastin formation has been documented to still be present as much as one year later from just a single treatment. Typically, maintenance treatments may be recommended to sustain optimal results over time. It is essential to follow a proper skincare routine and to protect your skin from sun damage to prolong the benefits.
