Lymphedema ulcers occur when a complication to the lymphatic system occurs. The lymphatic system is an open system that is responsible for immune health through the means of monitoring the interstitial fluids within our body tissues. Once the fluid is in the vessels of the lymphatic system it is known as lymph. When the system develops abnormally or undergoes the trauma of surgery then it becomes compromised. Therefore, the fluid exchange balance is thrown off which can cause extreme swelling in the body’s extremities. Similarly, to venous ulcers, the excessive build-up of fluid causes the body to open sores in the skin to release the fluid. Lymphedema ulcers are best treated by appropriate dressing changes, proper compression therapy, and elevation.
