Hidradenitis suppurativa

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a skin condition that causes chronic, painful lumps on the armpits, groin, buttocks and breasts. In addition to the formation of small lumps, common symptoms include the appearance of blackheads and the formation of tunneling or tracts under the skin. Hidradenitis suppurativa is more common in women than men and usually occurs after puberty, although symptoms of HS can be exacerbated at any age due to stress, weight gain, high humidity and/or hormonal changes.

To date, the exact cause of HS is unknown. It is most likely attributed to hormone regulation or an immune system reaction and is not contagious or due to poor personal hygiene. HS can also be hereditary, and a family history of the disease can increase your chances of having the skin condition.

There are a variety of ways to treat hidradenitis suppurativa, including medications, surgical procedures, and lifestyle changes. If the lumps caused by HS become infected, antibiotics may also be used to help the lumps heal.
