Zai Ganesh will begin her internal medicine residency in July 2021 in San Antonio, Texas. As a former participant in the Gap Year Scribe and Practice Assistant Program, she credits the unique program in giving her valuable experience. This experience helped her to stand out among her medical school peers.
Learning the medical terminology and building communication skills were both key benefits for Zai.
She gained experience in communicating with long-term care facilities while working alongside an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals.
Zai learned how the health care system operates and how all the pieces come together. It focused on the connection between in-patient, out-patient and long-term care.
She witnessed the impacts of building a positive relationship with patients and their team.
The scribe opportunity not only exposed Zai to medical terminology, but also allowed her to observe procedures first hand. This is something she felt was an important perspective for a medical student to have.
Building discipline is another area of growth that Zai experienced while being a part of the scribe program.
“You need self-driven discipline,” she said.
Gaining an understanding of how patient insurances work and the issues that may arise for patients was also beneficial for Zai. This is an area she said is not taught in medical school.
Being able to participate in long-term care, clinical and office aspects of the practice was instrumental for Zai as she continues her journey in medicine.
