Helping one patient at a time
Helping one patient at a time. That is the focus of Dr. Mikhail Novikov and a driving force for his practice. He is committed to helping others and prioritizes the human aspect of the profession. Building a strong patient relationship and treating the patient as a whole is important to him for the best outcomes.
Background
Dr. Novikov’s roadmap to becoming a surgeon started in eighth grade, while studying human anatomy. His interest in medicine was ignited and led him to various volunteering experiences in the medical field. At age 16, he started working as a janitor mopping floors in the Emergency Department at a small town hospital in Russia, where he grew up. It was the exposure to different patients and gradually being able to view bigger procedures that made him dream bigger.
In many European countries, medical students increasingly add clinical experience as they work through the levels of patient care – nursing assistant, nurse and then physician. While working nights, weekends and during school breaks, Dr. Novikov was able to master all levels of health care in the system. It’s that ladder of experience that has given him the special ability to truly understand the daily interactions between patients and health care workers.
He found something very gratifying when former patients would recognize him while using public transportation or walking in town. After working at larger medical institutions in the United States, he missed the local touch, and decided to open the practice in Northborough.
His approach
Dr. Novikov specializes in wound care and is recognized for outstanding healing outcomes. He credits this to using a holistic approach with his patients and treating the patient as a whole. He addresses the risk factors and other factors that led to the wound, in addition to treating the wound. Treating elderly patients is a significant part of his practice.
He views his prompt availability for direct patient communication as part of the profession.
Treating elderly patients is a significant part of his practice, often providing bedside services at nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities. They are seen in their own environment without needing transportation arrangements, which minimizes patient stress and use of health care insurance.
Dr. Novikov prides himself on the positive collaborative professional relationships he has with other specialists in the area and other providers on staff.
He and his staff participate regularly in continued medical education and discussions, including attending international wound care and dermatology conferences. They exceed the State’s requirements for continued medical education hours.
The practice continues to grow, but always will reflect Dr. Novikov’s commitment to the care of his patients.
