Cassandra Chu is a graduate of the College of Health Professions Physician Assistant program at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. She brings her dermatology interest, commitment to building patient relationships, and enthusiasm to learn as the newest provider at Dr. Novikov Wellness and Skin Care.
Path to medicine
Growing up just outside of Atlanta, Cassandra remembers her father, a retired surgeon, tell fascinating (and sometimes gross) medical stories at dinner. She said these stories are what first sparked her interest in the field.
She completed her bachelors at Georgia Institute of Technology in Biomedical Engineering. This allowed her to explore her interest in biology and medicine and the need for healthcare technology. Cassandra was able to work on prototypes for patients with Parkinson’s disease.
While she was attending Georgia Tech, she participated in the Physician Assistant Club and worked alongside PAs as a medical assistant at primary care and dermatology practices.
“That is what truly inspired me to take the PA path–it was a perfect fit,” Cassandra said.
New role
Cassandra is excited about her new role at the practice that combines both dermatology and wound care.
“Some days are in the office for clinical dermatology care and others are bedside in nursing homes,” she said. “I enjoy seeing the range and scope of the practice. I always try to be open to whatever happens, to learning, and to being cognizant of how we can be efficient with the best outcome.”
Additionally, Cassandra prioritizes an empathetic approach to enhance the patient/provider relationship.
“I am sensitive to a lot of things and understand where the patients are coming from while still prioritizing their health,” she said. “I love building relationships with them. Although it can be challenging with dementia patients, it is refreshing when they are aware and are excited to have a conversation.”
Fun facts
Cassandra is new to Massachusetts and is originally from the South.
“I had visited a few times and liked the overall vibe of the city and its walkability, architecture and landscape,” she said.
Outside of work, she is an artist and enjoys sharing her art at local markets and fairs.
“I have always loved art–doodling, jewelry making, crafting,” she said. “My inspiration comes from pop culture, music lyrics, and my Asian background and culture.”
Welcome Cassandra Chu.
