When does a cyst require removal?

Cysts are slow growing “sacs” of tissue containing fluid or air, which often appear on the face, back or scalp. They can drain, rupture, grow larger, become infected, and deform surrounding tissue. Your surgical dermatologist may recommend the removal of the cysts, although they are usually benign (non cancerous).

Some common types of cysts include sebaceous cyst, epidermal inclusion cyst, pilar cyst and pilonidal cyst.

What to expect if the cyst needs to be removed

Surgical excision of the cyst may be recommended because of the risk of growth, infection, and rupture. However, don’t let that scare you.

The providers at Dr. Novikov Wellness and Skin Care will safely and gently remove cysts while using local anesthesia. A dermatologic surgeon can usually complete cyst removal within an hour with little or no pain or discomfort.

Dr. Novikov does not cut or shave your hair to remove cysts from the scalp.

Your provider often will use dissolving stitches to close the incision. Patients recover quickly and can usually shower the same day and return to normal activities. Scarring is minimal.

Health insurance plans may cover cyst removal if medically indicated. Some patients may want cysts removed for cosmetic reasons and may want to inquire about our flexible payment options instead of using health insurance.
