Amputation should never be the default solution for chronic wounds. Yet too often, it becomes the outcome—not because it’s unavoidable, but because earlier interventions never happened.
At Dr. Novikov Wellness and Skin Care, we believe wound care should always aim to preserve limbs and protect quality of life. Amputation brings lifelong challenges: limited mobility, chronic pain, emotional trauma, and a permanent dependence on prosthetics and rehabilitation. While it may be necessary in advanced cases, it should be a last resort.
“In the early days of my surgical training, the focus was always on big operating room cases,” Dr. Novikov recalls. “Outpatient wound care felt like a step down. That mindset still lingers. But the truth is, many patients benefit far more from preventive, personalized care than from major surgery.”
Unfortunately, some healthcare systems still treat amputation as a quick fix. In busy surgical settings, providers may skip the slower—but more effective—process of healing in favor of high-cost procedures. But wound care isn’t about speed-it’s about strategy.
Too often, care is reactive—stepping in only when a wound worsens or becomes infected. By that point, options are limited. The focus needs to change from reacting to preventing and from amputation to education.
When Is Amputation Necessary?
Amputation may be required when:
- Severe infection threatens the patient’s life
- Blood flow is irreversibly compromised
- Necrosis spreads despite aggressive treatment
Even when it is life-saving, amputation still carries long-term consequences and should not be normalized.
What Can We Do to Prevent It?
Up to 85% of diabetes-related amputations are preventable with timely care and proper intervention.
We prevent amputations by:
- Identifying at-risk wounds early
- Creating personalized treatment plans
- Healing diabetic foot ulcers, arterial ulcers and other chronic wounds before they reach the point of no return
- Monitoring progress at the bedside
- Collaborating with nurses, therapists, and staff
- Providing local wound care that prioritizes outcomes—not surgical volume
Dr. Novikov’s team works directly with long-term care facilities to offer hands-on, proactive wound management. We empower staff to escalate concerns early and provide the support needed to reverse poor wound trajectories before amputation becomes inevitable.
Amputation should never be seen as a solution to a chronic wound—it’s often the result of systemic failure. Amputation is not the goal. Healing is.
